it is enough
that he had been there
and had winnowed
the same sand,
that then and
since then
both have always tread
beneath a related twilight,
inhaling the same sky.

she says with some discomfort
though he is also her ease,
and constant motion
is her remedy for loss
and always,
a fine linking thread
reaching through mild landscape
over firm sea
that preserves them
within itself
a pressed gelatin film
between a lens
and another lens
